In class we spoke about the power of language with these people. That is why these stories have so much importance to these people. So in the story, How to Write a Letter, the man has a daughter who has came back from being away in school for seven years. Upon returning from school the father asks the daughter to write a letter dictating the sounds that the people from the stories make. After the father asks, “Is you got dat?” only to receive the answer, “Naw suh, Ah ain’t got it yet.” “How come you ain’t got it?” asked the father and the daughter replied, “Cause Ah can’t spell (clucking sound).” This I think, highlights the importance that the people from the stories put on their oral language and that is what makes these stories so important. Although they recognize the importance of spoken word they have yet to discover the difference of, or even the use of, language in print.
